BLACK RIVER &WESTERN RAILROAD

Railroad Days 2004

August 21 & 22, 2004

Ever wanted to know more about railroading? Ever wanted to see many aspects of railroad in one day, without leaving one location? The Black River & Western Railroad’s “Railroad Days” has what you’re looking for! The Black River & Western Railroad “Railroad Days” is an opportunity for the dedicated volunteers of the BR&W to present and explain railroading to the general public. We have a high sense of pride at BR&W, and are pleased and excited to be able to bring and explain our knowledge of railroading to the public.

There will be many activities happening on the BR&W’s Ringoes grounds. We will have train rides, private caboose tours, trackwork demonstration, static equipment displays, cab tours, shop tours, motorcar rides, garden railroad display, and railroad collectables swap meet and show. On Saturday night we will hold a night photo shoot. We will also have historic military equipment displays, vintage car displays and food vendors.

There is no fee for the events in Ringoes, however, because parking in Ringoes will be extremely limited, we are encouraging everyone to ride the train from Flemington.

Spend a relaxing layover in Ringoes to take in all the offerings, and ride home on one of our many scheduled trains back to Flemington. There is ample parking in Flemington, which, as always is FREE!

Events will start at 11:30am and run until 6:00pm on both days.

Caboose Tours

Ringoes is home to many privately owned cabooses. Many people are familiar with shape and looks of a caboose, but have you ever stepped inside? Through the cooperation of the owners, we will bring tours through these cabooses and give you just that opportunity.

Trackwork Demonstration

There is a lot more to railroading than just running trains up and down the track. The tracks need to be maintained to certain standard. Twice per day, we will demonstrate how the track is maintained.

Static Equipment Display

There will be PLENTY of historic equipment lined up on the side tracks in Ringoes on display. Bring your camera and take all the pictures you want!

Locomotive Cab Tours

Ever want to see what is inside the cab of a diesel locomotive? Now is your chance! Sit in the engineer’s seat and have the opportunity to learn the workings of an operating diesel locomotive. Engineers will be on hand to explain all the controls. He may even let you ring the Bell and toot the horn!

Shop Tours

Maintaining the equipment at a railroad takes many special tools and machines. 4 times per day, you can step inside our shop for a guided tour where you can see the repairs underway on our steam locomotive, Number 60. The restoration crew will be on hand so you will have a chance to talk to the men that are getting their hands dirty doing this difficult work.

Motor Car Rides

Motorcars are a unique piece of railroad equipment. They were used by many railroads in the middle part of the 20th century for track inspection. At no charge, we will give riders on a motorcar tour of Ringoes Yard.

Garden Railroad Display

The Black River Garden Railroad Club will bring one of their displays to Ringoes to show off their fine Garden Railroad work.

Railroad Collectible Swap Meet

We will have various railroad collectible vendors set up stands in Ringoes for the railroad collector to buy and swap collectables.

We will also have Military equipment, vintage cars, and food vendors on the grounds!
